Baseplate

Overview
The Baseplate Design Tool is a comprehensive and fully automated engineering solution developed for the design of steel column baseplates subjected to axial loads combined with biaxial moments. The software is capable of designing both stiffened and unstiffened baseplates, with or without shear keys, while complying with practical industry requirements and accepted engineering standards.
Designed for consulting engineers, fabrication teams, EPC organizations, and industrial infrastructure projects, the software significantly reduces engineering man-hours by eliminating repetitive trial-and-error calculations and detailing revisions.
Intelligent Automated Design
The software automatically computes the required sizes of:
- Baseplates
- Anchor bolts
- Stiffeners
- Shear keys
- Pedestal dimensions
based on user-defined minimum acceptable limits, applied loads, material grades, and selected column profiles.
The tool also performs automatic dimension verification and continuously updates bolt edge distances, pitch, gauge, end distances, and overall plate dimensions whenever the user modifies any relevant input.
This ensures that the generated arrangement remains both practical and code-compliant throughout the design process.
Wide Range of Baseplate Configurations
The software incorporates 25 different baseplate configurations covering:
- Pinned bases
- Fixed bases
- Shear-key arrangements
- Rolled sections
- Built-up sections
- User-defined profiles
This flexibility allows the software to be used across a broad range of industrial, commercial, and infrastructure projects.
Load Combination Handling
The software can process:
- Up to 51 support joints
- Up to 251 load combinations in a single run
All governing load combinations are identified automatically, thereby minimizing manual effort and reducing the possibility of overlooking critical cases.
Users may also assign different permissible stress increase values for different load combinations as required by the adopted design code.
Seamless STAAD and ETABS Integration
Support reactions can be imported directly from:
- STAAD output files (.ANL or .TXT)
- ETABS-generated Excel or text files (.xlsx, .xls, .txt, .csv, .tsv)
- User-arranged Excel sheets
The software automatically detects compatible ETABS file formats and extracts the required support reactions efficiently.
In addition, there is no need for manual interchange of forces between global axes and local baseplate axes. The software automatically transforms reactions based on the selected column orientation, thereby eliminating a common source of user error.
CAD Drawings and Engineering Output
The software generates highly detailed outputs including:
- Step-by-step design calculations
- Formula-based reports
- Explanatory sketches and figures
- Design code references
- Detailed Bill of Quantities (BOQ)
- Accurate CAD drawings
The CAD drawings produced by the software are drafting-ready and may also be used directly for 3D modeling without requiring further modifications.
Industry-Oriented Engineering Solution
The software is developed with practical industrial applications in mind and follows engineering practices commonly adopted in the oil and gas industry, including compliance considerations related to:
- PIPs
- DEPs
- Industrial steel structure detailing practices
The software provides numerous design options suitable for a wide range of structures and industries, making it an efficient and dependable solution for professional engineering applications.

Michael Anderson, Senior Structural Engineer, USA –
SHEETFORGE Baseplate has significantly improved our baseplate design workflow. The automatic design of stiffened and unstiffened baseplates, anchor optimization, shear key checks, BOQ, and CAD output saves a huge amount of engineering and drafting time.
Kevin Roberts, Structural Engineering Professional, Canada –
We were genuinely impressed by how smoothly it handled dimensional checks and practical detailing requirements. Please keep us informed about your upcoming applications, so we do not waste valuable engineering time reinventing ordinary spreadsheets when such efficient and affordable SHEETFORGE solutions are already available.
Rajesh Kumar, Structural Design Engineer, India –
We found the SHEETFORGE Baseplate application extremely useful for handling multiple support reactions and load combinations. The automatic governing combination selection and CAD-ready output make it far more efficient than conventional Excel sheets.
Jonathan Miller, Structural Engineering Professional, Australia –
The Baseplate application from SHEETFORGE clearly proves that well-developed engineering tools can save both time and effort. The dimensional checks were handled so efficiently that we now feel it is better to adopt SHEETFORGE applications than to spend valuable engineering hours building ordinary Excel tools ourselves which are also risky in use.
Ahmed Hassan, Practicing Structural Consultant, UAE –
The ability to import STAAD/ETABS reactions and automatically transform global reactions to local axes is a major advantage. SHEETFORGE Baseplate has helped us produce accurate calculations, optimized baseplate details, and drawing outputs in a very short time.
Daniel Cooper, Engineering Consultant, UK –
After using SHEETFORGE Baseplate, I wished I had known about this application before trying to build my own baseplate design spreadsheet. The automated checks, optimization, BOQ, and CAD output make it a much more complete and professional solution.
Sandeep Verma, RCC Design Engineer, India –
SHEETFORGE Baseplate saved us from the limitations of our internally developed Excel sheets. Looking back, we would have saved considerable time and effort had we discovered this tool before starting our own baseplate design workbook.
Arvind Sharma, Design Engineer – Civil, India –
We were especially impressed with the smooth dimensional checks in the SHEETFORGE Baseplate Design application.
